BURGERS: Our most popular BBQ fare, but the average quarter pounder beef burger contains about 220 calories, which would take about 40 minutes to walk off, and that’s before you add in a bun. Try to choose one of the reduced-fat burgers on offer. Flaming good: M&S Skinny beef burger, less than 3% fat, 110 calories. Tesco half-fat burger, 168 cals. Sainsbury’s reduced-fat, 162 cals. BANGERS: Sausages can be packed with high levels of salt – not good for your blood pressure – as well as saturated fat. Choose those with high meat content. There are also plenty of reduced-fat bangers available. Flaming good: Morrisons Eat Smart Cumberland Sausages, 70% reduced fat, 145 calories for two. Asda’s Light & Lean sausages, just 3% fat and 71 calories per banger. CHICKEN: Chicken drumsticks are a good lean choice but by removing the skin after cooking you can slash 70 calories a time and reduce your fat consumption by about nine grams. Another good choice are chicken or turkey burgers. Flaming good: Sainsbury’s turkey burgers, 144 calories; M&S Skinny chicken burger, 111 calories; Asda turkey burger, 140 calories. STEAKS AND RIBS: The ultimate luxury but try a lean venison steak – typically half the calories of a sirloin cut. Or bung on a heart healthy salmon or tuna steak. Flaming good: Tesco venison steak leg, 107 calories per 100g; Iceland tuna steak, 138 calories per 100g. KEBABS: Whether pork, lamb, fish, or chicken, these can be a low-calorie choice and you can mix in your own veg to boost the vitamin and mineral content. Flaming good: Tesco Sweet Chilli King Prawn Kebab, 30 calories per kebab. Asda pork and pepper kebabs, 97 calories each. Sainsbury’s Lamb & Mint Kebab, 104 calories. SIDES, SAUCES AND SALADS: Beware dishes such as coleslaw and potato salad which can ramp up the calories and fat, as can the dressing in salads. Try to choose a lighter version and swap BBQ sauces for mustard or ketchups with reduced sugar and salt. Flaming good: Aldi reduced fat coleslaw, 125 calories per 100g; Lidl reduced-fat hummus, 128 calories per portion; Tesco Healthy Living Potato Salad, 55 calories per tablespoon. Heinz Ketchup 5% less sugar and salt, 10 calories per 15ml. Bramwells light mayo, 9 cals per 15ml. Asda light Caesar dressing, 9 cals per serving. NIBBLES: That barbecue takes a long time to cook and nine out of 10 of us will grab some fattening snacks such as crisps while we wait. Try to snack on olives. Flaming good: Snack a Jacks contain just 121 calories a bag, Sunbites about 120 or Walker Baked crisps contain 70% less fat. BOOZE: Drinking in the sun can lead to dehydration so drink water alongside the tipples. Flaming good: Try Skol, at 2.8% ABV, just 100 calories per 440ml can or Bud Light at 3.5% ABV, 127 calories per can. Or go for a summery low calorie spirit and mixer. MyCocktail’s Mojito, 250ml can is just 60 calories, a Gordon’s gin and slimline tonic, 250ml can, 75 calories.
