NO LIMITS

Wagner made us a band of heroes says penalty ace

- By PAUL BROWN

CHRISTOPHER SCHINDLER has revealed the wacky secret behind Huddersfield boss David Wagner’s success – customised wristbands.

Schindler scored the winning penalty in the shoot-out to fire the Terriers into the top flight for the first time since 1972.

And he claims it’s all down to Wagner’s “no limits” message – and the personal touch.

Wagner had blue and white wristbands made for every player with their initials, squad number and a motivational message before their play-off semi-final win over Sheffield Wednesday.

It read: “#nolimits We’re on our way to W .... !” and Schindler reckons it’s a message that helped them beat Reading in Monday’s final at Wembley.

The German defender said: “He and his coaching team have done a brilliant job. From the start he told us there are no limits and had these wristbands made.

Underdog

“Every single player has one to remind them. It was his idea and when a coach comes up with something like that, it makes you believe in him.

“He presented us with them before the semi-final against Sheffield Wednesday.

“Maybe it’s just a small detail but it’s important to make everybody believe you can do it, especially a ‘smaller’ club.”

Huddersfield will be favourites to go straight back down next season but Schindler insists they have nothing to fear from the Premier League.

He said: “We know the team will change but with our approach it’s hard for every opponent to play against us.

“This is something we can rely on, it gives us the power not to be afraid of anyone.

“All I know is that every game is going to be a highlight for me next season and I am going to make sure I enjoy every second I am allowed to play in the Premier League.

“For sure we will be the biggest underdog next year, but that could also be our biggest strength and we can draw on that.

“The chairman is not a guy who makes unbelievable investments – of course we will need quality, but it’s more important to have good characters who can make life uncomfortable for opponents.”
