BAYLISS STAYS ON THE ATTACK

- by RODNEY WHITE

TREVOR BAYLISS has urged England to keep firing despite their disastrous Lord’s collapse on the eve of their Champions Trophy campaign.

The no-nonsense Aussie said it was the worst possible time for his side to start playing more conservatively and insisted no team has ever won a global tournament playing that way.

But he admitted that a team relying on all-out attack will always run the risk of crashing to earth with a bump, as England did against South Africa in Monday’s final ODI.

“I have never seen a team win a global tournament playing defensively,” Bayliss said.

“It’s always a team that backs itself and plays bold cricket. So you have to take the good with the bad.

“But you also have to be a bit flexible and better than we were at Lord’s.

“You can still have a positive mind on these wickets, to defend well and leave well and pick the right ball to hit.

“From that point of view the message won’t change. And while I don’t think we’ll see too many of those wickets, you never know.

Sparking

“If we do, we have to be smart enough to work it out.”

England’s nightmare saw six wickets fall in 30 balls, with the first dismissal sparking yet more debate about Jason Roy’s (right) place in the side. There has been talk he could lose his place to Jonny Bairstow but while Bayliss suggested that might be the case, skipper Eoin Morgan is adamant there will be no changes.

“Jonny keeps doing the right things and it’s going to be an interesting selection meeting,” Bayliss said.

“But Jason has been important to us in the last two years and to do well, we will need him playing well.”
