TRIBUTES flooded in last night for Coronation Street legend Roy Barraclough.
Roy, famous for playing Rovers Return landlord and Bet Lynch’s sleazy husband Alec Gilroy, died peacefully aged 81 yesterday, his family confirmed.
Julie Goodyear, who played his on-screen wife, said: “I have no words to describe how devastated I feel. We kept in close touch and spoke to each other at least two or three times every week.
“I will treasure all the happy times we had working and laughing together.
“We were just like a married couple – crazy, I know, but true. Rest in peace, Roy. I will always love you.”
Warmth
The actor enjoyed a 55-year acting career on both the stage and TV. After a number of brief appearances in the soap in the 60s and 70s, he cemented his placed in 1986. Roy remained in the show for the next six years and returned in 1996 for another two years. Last night’s episode was dedicated to the actor, with the cast describing him as bringing “warmth and love” to the show. Aside from Corrie, Roy was known as Cissy, one half of Les Dawson’s TV comedy double act Ada and Cissy that stormed to success in the 1970s. Dawson’s daughter Charlotte paid tribute to Roy on Twitter, writing: “Omg I’m devastated...at least you get to be reunited with my daddy.” Comedian Matt Lucas also posted a picture of himself and Barraclough filming 2015 show Pompidou. He wrote: “Lovely man, brilliant actor.” Barraclough’s recent TV roles included Casualty, Last Of The Summer Wine, Last Tango In Halifax, and as Mr Grainger on the BBC’s tribute to Are You Being Served? last year.
