SET TO RANE

- by DAVE ARMITAGE

RAPHAEL VARANE has his eyes on his third Champions League winners’ medal. That’s a pretty mean achievement for any player, let alone one who only turned 24 five weeks ago. The French international stands at the heart of Real Madrid’s defence as they bid to put Italian giants Juventus to the sword. Varane said: “We are very excited and I personally am especially pleased to play in what will be my third final in four years. “It would be historic to win two in a row as nobody has managed it before.” Varane admits he is living the dream, adding: “I didn’t imagine this and that is the truth. That’s the reason I’m really enjoying everything that is happening to me.

“I know I must keep learning and improving but I set very high goals each year and every season is a challenge for me and the team.” Victory for Real would mean Varane would see off legendary Milan star Paolo Maldini’s record of being the first defender to win three Champions League titles by the age of 26. He added: “Maldini is a great example and it would be great to achieve that record. I will think about it but when the season ends, then you can look at the titles and records. I’m just focused on enjoying myself, playing and learning.” Varane, who has a big admirer in Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho, admits to being the quiet man of the dressing room. He said: “I’m very calm and I prefer to observe more than to speak. That’s just my way of being. On the field, I assume my responsibility, but in the dressing room, I’m more calm because I’m one of the youngest and still have a lot to learn.”
