ONE in four Brits hides cash from their partners – sometimes to pay for a relationship exit strategy.

The typical man has as much as £4,234 stashed away on the sly, a study revealed.

Meanwhile, the average woman hides a secret nest egg of £2,768, the research found.

Of those quizzed, 41% keep a secret pot of cash because they liked being independent while 23% said they kept it quiet as they were terrible with money.

The findings showed cash hiders often had several reasons for their secrecy. Money was squirrelled ® away by 27% for a holiday or mini break which they planned to take without their partner.

Almost two in 10 had their eye on a new car while one in five were saving for new clothes and designer items.

But 23% were saving on the quiet in case their relationship broke down and they needed the cash for an escape plan, according to the survey by car hire company autoeurope.co.uk.

The average adult felt they would need £22,748 as a buffer if their relationship fell apart.

One in five said if their spouse discovered the savings they would want to spend it immediately.

The most popular place to hide money was in an online savings account (35%) which avoids any bank statements in the post, followed by a regular bank account (26%), where the saver admitted to destroying any statements.

But underwear drawers and the back of the wardrobe were still popular hiding places for hefty wads of cash.

A crafty 11% even gave savings to a parent to stash away for them.

Although 17% felt it made sense to save in secret, 56% confessed that it was sneaky.
