Tributes as Kohl, 87, dies
FORMER German Chancellor Helmut Kohl has died aged 87.
Germany’s longest serving post-war leader, he had been wheelchair-bound since a fall in 2008.
His Christian Democratic Union party tweeted: “We mourn.”
As chancellor from 1982 to 1998, Kohl was the architect of German reunification.
He was a driving force behind the euro, and pushed for closer European integration.
