‘Streets are now no-go zones’

SPACED-out Spice zombies have turned parts of a town into no-go areas.

The group of addicts high on the drug hurl abuse at shoppers before passing out in the street.

Furious locals have posted shocking pictures of the gang on Facebook.

One shows a man passed out in a bush. Another is pictured lying face down on grass near the town centre, and a third is seen slumped comatose on a bench.

A horrified resident said: “Something needs to be done about it. Parts of the town are becoming no-go zones.”

Locals say the problem in Ripley, Derbys, has got worse in recent weeks.

A man who has lived in the town for 20 years said: “They abuse everybody that walks by.

They even abused a paramedic when they walked into the chip shop. It is so antisocial, the way they behave, and something needs to be done.

“It makes people not want to take their kids into the town and turns it into a horrible place to go.”

Former legal high Spice mimics the effect of cannabis and is highly addictive.

The drug also lowers a user’s oxygen levels, causing their body to shut down.

As a result, people can appear to be in a zombielike state.

Police chief, Insp Dave Parker, said his officers were aware of the problem.

He added: “We recognise that drug taking and street drinking are issues affecting Ripley town centre.

“It is my aim to work with local agencies and the community to tackle this problem.

“My officers will be having an enhanced presence in and around the town centre, by increasing patrols and engaging with the local community.”

A council spokesman said it was working with the police and other agencies to tackle the problem.
