ANT EYES A BIG HIT

RUGBY LEAGUE Wigan ace in trial by video

- By TREVOR BAXTER

ANTHONY GELLING’S video jibe at Super League’s ‘eye in the sky’ officials has become an internet hit.

But Wigan team-mate Joe Burgess is not surprised by Gelling’s cheeky take on the controversy over recent on-field referrals.

“He’s crackers,” said Burgess. “He is joking but at the same time he is trying to make a point without getting himself into trouble.

“But that’s Gels. He is a character. Some of the things he does, you can’t believe he is doing.”

The Warriors are smarting from two calls against them in their last two games, including Tony Clubb’s Challenge Cup ‘no try’ verdict by video official James Child.

Gelling’s three-minute online parody has been viewed nearly 60,000 times.

He splices together clips of Sergio Aguero’s Premier League title-winning goal for Manchester City against QPR in 2012 and Conor McGregor’s 13-second UFC demolition of Jose Aldo in 2013.

Stripped

Gelling’s commentary suggests Aguero’s shot goes wide of the post and Aldo won the bout.

“It is just the way he is,” added Burgess. “His personality off the field just shows on the field. He has no regrets.”

Burgess was denied a last-minute Wembley try winner by an undisputed forward pass but many pundits believe Wigan should have been awarded a penalty try because the ball was stripped from Clubb’s grasp.

Wigan travel to the KCOM Stadium on Friday in a crucial Super 8s contest, when defeat would leave them four points adrift of Hull with only two games remaining.

Burgess said: “If we play like we did at Wembley again, we won’t get the win.

“But we are confident we will finish in the top four and we think we can get third.

“A few weeks ago it was looking doubtful we would make the top four at all but we have managed to bring it back.” E-League Leaders’ Shield winners Castleford have announced a £286,052 profit for 2016 on a £4.6m turnover.
