Trump is rapped over intel

-

PRIME Minister Teresa May last night criticised Donald Trump for claiming British police already had the Tube bomber “in their sights”.

The US President tweeted a suggestion that Scotland Yard had a suspect before the blast and was closing in on the culprit.

But after chairing a meeting of the Government’s emergency COBRA committee, Mrs May said: “I never think it’s helpful for anybody to speculate on what is an ongoing investigation.

“The police and the security services are obviously doing all the work to discover the full circumstances of this cowardly attack.’’ A Scotland Yard spokesman also described Mr Trump’s comments as “unhelpful” and “pure speculation”.

Detectives neither named nor released a photograph of anyone they are hunting in connection with the bombing.

Following the Barcelona terror attack last month, an image of the main suspect emerged within three hours helping police stop a follow-up atrocity and smash the terror cell.

It is not the first time Washington and London have found themselves at loggerheads over the release of information following terror attacks.

After the Manchester Arena bombing in May, American officials named the culprit as Salman Abedi before British police.

London’s Mayor Sadiq Khan refused last night to be drawn on Mr Trump’s intervention.

He would only say: “There is a manhunt under way as we speak.’’
