I GOOGLED MY FAMILY SLAUGHTER

Net revealed murder

- By NADEEM BADSHAH

A STUDENT found out that a homeless man had murdered her mum and brother after typing “stabbings” into Google.

Aaron Barley wept in the dock as Lydia Wilkinson told how she discovered the horror.

Barley admitted murdering Tracey Wilkinson, 50, and her son Pierce, 13, after the family had taken him into their home, given him a job, money and food.

Lydia, 18, was away at Bristol University at the time of the attacks.

Barley, 24, had already admitted attempting to murder her dad Peter, who was stabbed six times at their house in Stourbridge, West Mids.

The biology student told Birmingham Crown Court: “I remember typing into Google ‘Stourbridge, stabbings’.

“The first link showed a photo of my house with police tape around it. I remember ringing my boyfriend back and saying: ‘It’s me, it’s us, they’ve been stabbed’.

“I went into a friend’s room, where we called the police and asked if this was real or not, if it was me.

“They said: ‘We are very sorry to tell you that your mum and brother have passed away and your dad is in theatre and we don’t know whether he will survive or not’.”

Lydia stood to read her victim impact statement out, telling ® the defendant: “You have obliterated my life.” Mr Wilkinson was rushed to hospital and needed 97 stitches. The dad told the court of the moment he was knifed with the drug user shouting: “Die you bastard.” He said: “I opened the back door and, as I did it, he jumped out from behind a wall in the kitchen, all dressed in black, with a big knife held over his head and started stabbing me with it. “I remember looking around and seeing this huge trail of blood across the floor, which was my blood.” The family befriended Barley a year before his attack after finding him living in a cardboard box outside a Tesco. Karim Khalil, prosecuting, revealed the killer’s parents were uncle and niece which he said “may account for his unusual facial features.” Mr Wilkinson gave him a job at his safety barrier firm in Newport, Gwent, but Barley left after taking drugs. Two months later he was found asleep on their driveway. Mr Wilkinson said: “My wife, being the compassionate soul that she was, decided that as a family we should help him again.” Barley will be sentenced today.
