Lions need Captain Marvel.. like me!

- by PAUL BROWN

BRYAN ROBSON claims there are NO outstanding candidates to captain England.

The former Manchester United midfielder, dubbed ‘Captain Marvel’, won 90 caps for his country, wearing the armband 65 times. But he can’t see a leader in the current crop of Three Lions, with Gareth Southgate rotating his skippers. Robson said: “I don’t think there is any standout player, who you say, ‘He should definitely be the England captain’.

“I don’t think it’s a burden. It’s just a player who can lead by example and enjoy the role

and take on what the coach is saying and just help your team-mates.

“I think that’s part of it – but I don’t think there is anyone that stands out.”

Harry Kane, Gary Cahill, Joe Hart and Jordan Henderson have captained England under Southgate.

Robson also fears England are too mentally fragile at big tournaments.

He said: “That’s still a part that England need to work on, working with the players to give confidence.

“Confidence to try and enjoy the tournament rather than be afraid of it because they’re thinking about all of the pressures rather than just relaxing and enjoying themselves.”

Former England boss Roy Hodgson fears Kane’s goalscoring could struggle if he gets the armband.

Hodgson said: “I’d like to see him scoring goals and doing what he does best.

“It could be that the captaincy could weigh on him and in some way impact upon that.”
