THAT’LL BE GUD

Iceman Johann wants another crack at England

- By TIM ABRAHAM

BURNLEY’S Johann Berg Gudmundsson says Iceland would love the chance to humiliate England again at next year’s World Cup.

The midfielder was part of the side which dumped the Three Lions out of Euro 2016 with a shock 2-1 win in Nice.

Iceland clinched their place at Russia 2018 with Gudmundsson scoring in the 3-0 win in Turkey last week, and again in the 2-0 victory over Kosovo on Monday.

And now the 26-year-old said: “Hopefully we’ll get England in the group phase.

“It was a great game for us last time and I believe we could beat them again.

“The media always come back to that game, the Iceland humiliation.

“The pressure on England is greater, I understand that. They have much more expensive players than us and they haven’t done as well as they should for a long time.

“The pressure is always going to be on them.”

Gudmundsson (inset) claims England have got no chance of winning the World Cup, but believes they are still massively underachieving.

He said: “I’m not expecting ® – and hopefully you’re not – England to win the World Cup. “I think they should be doing a bit better and hopefully they can do it in the next World Cup, just not against us. “They won the group comfortably but it’s about what they do in Russia, when it matters on the big stage.” Gudmundsson says he sees comparisons between Burnley’s place in the Premier League and Iceland’s on the world stage. As he prepared for today’s visit of West Ham, he added: “There’s a lot of similarities between the teams. “Normally we are the underdog, not a lot of pressure. But we believe we can do it in this league and it’s the same with Iceland, we can do it at that level. “In both teams there is a group of players willing to work for each other, no egos to ruin it for everyone else. “Everyone pulls in the same direction and that’s really important in team sport.”
