Kane’s a Shear bet to land Prem record

- by ALEX CROOK

HARRY KANE can smash Alan Shearer’s Premier League goalscoring record, according to Jermain Defoe. Tottenham hitman Kane, 24, is already well on the way towards Shearer’s haul of 260 goals after netting 84 times in only 123 games. If he keeps scoring at his current rate, red-hot Kane will overtake Newcastle and Blackburn legend Shearer (right) in nine more seasons – and he will still be only 32 then. “Shearer was special and with all the great forwards in the Premier League he is still at the top,” said Bournemouth and England striker Defoe, who is seventh on the list with 159 goals. “Wayne Rooney was getting close to him but it is not easy. For 260 goals you have to be doing it year in, year out for a number of years. “I just feel like Harry has to be thinking about beating him because I would in his position. “I have always looked at the list from day one and said, ‘Right, even if I can get in the top 10 or 20, or even be in that 100 club, it is such a great achievement’. “It’s such a hard league to score in – especially consistently. “There is a lot of pressure because when you set high standards people just expect you to score. “When you have a little dip people are like, ‘What’s going on?’ “Harry must be thinking that’s the dream... to be the highest goalscorer for England and the highest goalscorer in the Premier League. “If he continues scoring goals like he is scoring goals, the sky is the limit. “It’s not going to be easy, of course, because Shearer was unbelievable.” Defoe faces former club Spurs at Wembley today and wants to link up with Kane for England at the World Cup in Russia. But he says the duo will struggle to play in the same team – because they are both too selfish. Defoe, 35, added: “I think we would just both be shooting, wouldn’t we?”
