Red-faced Roy left to feel the four-ce

-

JUST when Roy Hodgson thought he was leaving his England debacle behind, the nightmare returned.

The veteran boss suffered another humiliating night as his Crystal Palace didn’t just get knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Championship Bristol City – they were roundly thrashed.

And there was even a horror re-run of that awful night in Nice as Iceland international Hordur Magnusson set up one of City’s goals with a long throw.

With 39 minutes gone and his struggling Premier League side having just let in an equaliser, another Magnusson took a leaf out Unluckily Patrick van Aanholt, the one man who had kept his place, had already cost Palace a goal a few minutes earlier by heading the ball straight to Matty Taylor to volley home from eight yards.

The spell summed up bottom of the Premier League table Palace’s desperate season.

They had deserved to take the lead when Bakary Sako ran on to Ruben Loftus-Cheek’s incisive pass before beating goalkeeper Luke Steele.

But even among a group of players who have not been heavily involved in first team action, the lack of confidence was alarming as City were allowed to get back in the game. Lee Johnson’s side, beaten 3-0 by Leeds on Saturday to drop out of the Championship play-off places, were even able to shrug off the loss of record signing striker Famara Diedhiou to injury.

And when Taylor worked the ball wide to Joe Bryan after 59 minutes, the home-produced defender produced a spectacular rising shot from 25 yards to put City further in front.

It was to get even worse for Hodgson. Jairo Riedewald made a hash of attempting to clear and the ball fell for Callum O’Dowda to angle a shot from 20 yards that had Hennessey stranded.
