A VICAR has banned hymn favourite Onward Christian Soldiers in case it offends other faiths.

The hymn is traditionally sung at Remembrance Day services.

Royal British Legion members now plan to boycott this year’s service after the ban by Rev Steve Bailey at St Peter’s CofE Church in Oadby, Leics.

Ian Thorpe, 61, vice-chairman of the local Legion club, said: “The new vicar is not happy with Onward Christian Soldiers being sung.

“It’s been done nearly every year in recent memory. But he said they’re not doing it because not everyone at the service will be Christians.

“It’s political correctness gone mad. Nobody has ever complained about the hymn so why change it?”

Rev Bailey said that for the first time Oadby Multicultural Group will be laying a wreath at the war memorial and he wants “people of all faiths” to “feel welcome”.
