Strictly beats romp for Brits It’s closing time

TELLY is more fun than sex or watching football.

One in five people prefer TV to a romp and four in 10 think it beats the nation’s favourite game, according to a poll.

More than a third say tuning in to the box is more important to them than religion and 30% would pick TV over chocolate.

And 40% claim sitting down for their favourite shows is the highlight of the day.

Size was also found to be important in a survey – the average television set is now 43 inches, having increased by 20 inches in the last 15 years.

Freeview polled 2,000 Brits to mark its 15th anniversary.

A quarter of people have taken up a new hobby thanks to television (27%), with shows such as Strictly Come Dancing getting them into the ballroom and The Great British Bake Off into the kitchen. One in six women revealed they had even professed their love for someone after seeing it happen on television.

People aged 18 to 24 have been most influenced with one in 12 quitting a job after a character did the same.

Managing director of Freeview Guy North said: “TV has the power to transport us anywhere we want when we’re stressed, cheer us up when we’re sad.

“When you consider how our viewing habits have changed, telly remains a fundamental part of our everyday life.

“Its ability to influence decision-making is quite astonishing.” PUBS are closing at the rate of 15 a week as punters opt to drink at home.

And hard-up landlords are grappling with a £204million increase in business rates while inflationary pressures next year will see the industry hit with even more bad news.

Figures from business rates specialists CVS show that 390 pubs were either closed, converted or demolished between April and September.
