The Ducati ace still trails Marc Marquez by 21 points going into the final round in Valencia in two weeks.

To take the title for the first time Dovizioso will have to win and hope Marquez finishes lower than 11th.

“I know it will be very difficult at Valencia because it’s a track where Marquez always goes well,” he said.

“But we’ll be going to Spain with confidence to try and bring home S Vettel 1min 18.785secs – lap 69. ® the victory. I’m very pleased for the win, which keeps my hopes alive.”

Dovizioso (right) was fourth in the early stages but took third from Repsol Honda’s Marquez and closed in on leader Johann Zarco with Jorge Lorenzo in second.

The two factory Ducati riders then occupied the top two places with Spaniard Lorenzo in front.

Then, with six laps remaining, TV pictures showed a text message to Lorenzo’s dashboard to change the engine mapping of his bike.

That prompted speculation it was a coded message of team orders, but moments later a Lorenzo error saw him struggle to hold on to his bike and prevent a crash.

Dovizioso seized the opportunity to charge through for victory by 0.743secs from Lorenzo with Zarco a comfortable third.

Marquez, who knew second place would be enough for a sixth title, crossed the line a distant fourth.
