FINN WITH A CHANCE

- by JULIE STOTT

LIAM FINN is refusing to even dare to dream of a World Cup quarter-final against England.

But the Ireland rugby league half-back was delighted as the Wolfhounds produced the first shock of the tournament with their 36-12 win over Italy yesterday.

It puts them on course for a possible last-eight clash with England in a group that also includes Wales and Papua New Guinea.

Victory over PNG on Sunday would move them a step closer to a showdown with England boss Wayne Bennett’s men. But Wakefield star Finn

(above) said: “We’ve got a lot of work to do before we dare to dream of going to Melbourne.”

Ireland were well worth their win. They scored tries through St Helens duo Kyle Amor and Louie McCarthy-Scarsbrook with Warrington forward George Kind crossing and Toronto winger Liam Kay touching down twice. Finn, who kicked six goals from seven attempts, added: “We trained really well and knew we were going to put in a performance.” PNG beat Wales 50-6 on Saturday to set up the tasty clash with Ireland. Finn said: “They have a route-one style of play. It’s pretty straightforward. “If you don’t deal with it, you end up getting beat heavily. “Next week is so important. If we knock them off, then we’re in a good position to get through our group.” Scotland were hammered 50-4 by Tonga in their Group B game with Hull KR’s Danny Addy scoring their try.
