MP BLAMES DIM VOTERS FOR BREXIT

Remain towns ‘brighter’

A LABOUR MP sparked uproar by branding all Brexit voters stupid.

Barry Sheerman has claimed “better-educated people” voted to Remain.

Nearly 17.5million people said they wanted to leave the EU in Britain’s historic referendum.

But Mr Sheerman said: “You can actually see the pattern, nearly all the university towns voted Remain.”

The politician, whose constituents in Huddersfield voted to Leave in last year’s vote, was blasted for his comments. James Whiting ® wrote: “You’ve got to be even thicker if you are in politics and insult the majority?”

This was echoed by Angie Cook, writing: “Educated in what? “Certainly not life, hard work, or knowing when we are being ripped off by the EU!”

His comments came during a discussion over a letter sent to universities by Tory MP Chris Heaton-Harris, asking for the names of professors teaching Brexit courses.

Mr Sheerman slammed the letter, saying it was an attempt to “frighten campuses”.

He also criticised Mr Heaton-Harris’s education, saying: “This man who went to Wolverhampton Polytechnic, who does he think he is, trying to frighten my university in Huddersfield?”

Pudsey Tory MP Stuart Andrew said: “I’m astounded by this snobbery.”

Yet Mr Sheerman said he was pleased his comments had “stimulated debate”.

He added: “Crystal clear Tory Party no longer the nasty party, Brexit has transformed it into the stupid party.”

Surveys have revealed more than 80% of university staff supported the Remain side in last year’s referendum.
