Cyclists mown down by maniac
AT LEAST eight people were killed and many more injured in a New York terror attack last night – after a pickup truck careered down a bike path.
The driver, a 29-year-old man, mowed down cyclists and pedestrians near the 9/11 terror attack memorial as he sped along up to 20 blocks.
In a hired Home Depot truck, the attacker hit numerous people and left bikes scattered on the ground as he drove south next to the Hudson River in Lower Manhattan.
But after colliding with a school bus, he jumped out with two fake guns, before being shot in the leg by police. He crashed near Stuyvesant High School.
Hundreds of officers rushed to the scene and around 10 shots were heard as officers targeted the terrorist.
Last night the arrested man was in hospital where he was expected to survive.
Police said they were not seeking other suspects. Witness Ramon Cruz, 27, said he saw a man crash his white truck and emerge from the vehicle, before he heard someone yell: “He’s got a gun, run, run!”
Two US government sources said it was being treated as a terrorist attack. The NYPD said on Twitter one vehicle struck another, the driver of one of the vehicles then “got out displaying imitation firearms and was shot by police”.
President Donald Trump tweeted: “In NYC, looks like another attack by a very sick and deranged person. Law enforcement is following this closely. NOT IN THE U.S.A.!”
New York Mayor Bill De Blasio said: “We know of eight innocent people who have lost their lives and over a dozen more injured. We know this action was intended to break our spirit. Our spirit will never be moved by an act of violence.”
