SMITH EYES NEW WORLD SHOT

Grudge win silences doubters

- By KEVIN FRANCIS

LIAM SMITH is back in the world title hunt after beating Liam Williams in their grudge match.

Scouser Smith claimed a majority points decision over Williams in Newcastle on Saturday and is now ready for a shot at the WBO super-welterweight title he held previously. Smith lost the belt to Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez in September last year and has vowed to win it back. His promoter Frank Warren will now give him that opportunity and said: “Whatever happens, Liam’s next fight will be for a world title next year – 100 per cent. “It was a great win and that took the doubt out of anyone’s mind who the winner was with a great, very professional job.” Smith said: “Since I lost the title, I have said that getting it back was my next aim. Liam Williams was just next in line for me ® to go and become world champion again. I didn’t want to look past Liam but once I beat him, I was always confident Frank Warren would produce the goods.”

Smith certainly erased all doubts this time, unlike his controversial win in his first fight with Williams in April.

Challenger

On that occasion, Williams was ahead on points when he retired with a badly cut eye, claiming he suffered a headbutt.

This time, Smith got the majority decision with two judges making him the winner (116-112 and 117-111) and the other awarding it to Williams 111-114.

Smith is now the official challenger for WBO champion Miguel Cotto, but the Puerto Rican could retire after his upcoming fight with Sadam Ali next month.

Meanwhile, Conor Benn, the son of Nigel, knocked out Brandon Sanudo in the second round in New York. To the whu div. Its on the net. 84 mill wage bill 45 mill spent on players. Bonuses signing on fees the cost of running the club bills tax its most prob more than 150 mill now. But unlike CFC who improved with bigger spending 90s and 00s whu are just as poor as they were 90s 00s even worse winning nothing. Great to see, Conte mugged that moaning sly thing off all day. Jose got the respect he deserves, and is already plotting his next multi million pound move. it won’t be his fault, never is. Your days of young players coming through have gone. I love txtin about loserpool and annoying their fans. i’d troll them on the web but i’m afraid t’internet hasn’t reached my village yet. jose you don’t demand respect, you gain it by what you say and do. And if you thought you could slag chelsea off and go to the ‘bridge’ and get a warm welcome it tells everyone how arrogant you are. P.s. dave rochdale what planet u on mate? that’s 3 pts every time utd come to town. nothing is going to change under wenger, cant beat the big boys, city game exposed everything that is wrong at Arsenal. U have a rose tinted view of lfc fans u wet quilt. They only sing wen they r winning & behave like slugs. Get real hugh pratt.
