JAMES Norton looks like he is auditioning to be the next James Bond in his gripping new BBC drama McMafia.

In the show – about Soviet corruption and money laundering – he plays good guy Alex Godman.

He is the English-raised son of Russian exiles with a Mafia history.

But when their past catches up with them, he must choose whether to enter their dark and dangerous world to protect them.

However, anyone watching the opening episode will spot clear parallels between Norton’s character and 007. They include the hunky actor: ¬ looking the dapper gent in a tuxedo – just like the British secret agent does in his movies

¬ using some impressive martial arts for some violent fight scenes – very similar to Bond

¬ having a sexy siren make a play for him – as always happens in 007 films

¬ splashing about in trunks in the sea – just like Daniel Craig in Casino Royale.

Norton has been one of the clear bookies’ favourites to be the new Bond when Craig quits.

Asked if he expected comparisons while filming McMafia, he admitted: “I did warn the screenwriter James that if they wrote the first scene getting out the black cab in tux they would maybe stir some of it.”

But for now he remains waiting in the wings – as Craig has now agreed to do one more 007 movie.

And Norton added: “I’m a big fan of his.”

¬ÊMcMafia – based on the book by Misha Glenny – will launch New Year’s Day on BBC One at 9pm.
