BRITS are being warned to brace for a freezing February – with temperatures plunging to -5C.

Forecasters are urging people to soak up the last of mild January, before an icy blast grips next month.

And winter’s final hoorah has led to fears it could be the coldest February on record.

Much of Britain has been enjoying mild weather, with temperatures this weekend set to hit 12C in Manchester and Newcastle and 13C in London.

It was so warm that snowdrops – usually a sign of spring – bloomed at Rococo Gardens in Painswick, Gloucs, pictured above.

But the mild weather will give way to heavy showers as storms roll in next week.

Coldest

The rain will then turn to snow as winter returns with a vengeance.

Bookies have now cut the odds from 8-1 to 4-1 on February being the coldest ever.

Jessica Bridge from Ladbrokes said: “It looks like next month should be renamed Freeze-uary as the mercury plummets.”

The icy spell looks set to hit as schools break-up for half-term.

A Met Office spokesman said: “It may become colder with an increased risk of snow in the north.

“And through the rest of the period, probably turning drier and perhaps rather cold, particularly in the south.” A HARE froze to death on a fence as temperatures plunged to a lethal -56C in Kazakhstan.
