KILLER PUNCH

Matt’s a knockout thanks to Fury

-

MATT DOHERTY thinks Wolves can deliver a knockout blow thanks to a chat with Tyson Fury.

The runaway leaders met the heavyweight boxer at their Spanish training camp in Marbella last week.

And it helped pick them up and bounce back after being floored by Nottingham Forest in their last game.

Irish defender Doherty looked like he’d done a few rounds with Fury after scoring the 15th-minute winner with his face to finish up with a cut nose and black eyes.

“Tyson didn’t give us a pep talk or anything, it was all just general chit-chat and we were asking about his training schedule,” said Doherty,

“It was something different and a good thing to do. The club is backing us on the pitch and also backing us off the pitch with trips like this.

“Perhaps we will have to ask for more weeks away if it works out like that every time.

“It could have gone the other way. If we had not performed the way we did then people would have been asking questions.

“We had fun but we worked hard. We had a laugh together, just as we would have at home training, only we had some sun on our backs.”

Doherty admitted the winner was a fluke and said: “The ball hit me in the face, my eyes were closed. We had a bit of luck there.

“Even with the pitch, earlier in the season it may have held the ball up and not gone in. But we will take everything that comes.”

Wolves now lead the table by 12 points from second-placed Derby.

Ipswich defender Jordan Spence said: “I’m sure if they do get promoted they will continue to invest heavily and there will be changes.

“They are a decent outfit but we know we can derail the top sides, as we did with Newcastle last year.

“Wolves have done us twice now so they are a decent side.

“They still have a long way to go and I’m sure other teams will have something to say and try to stop them.”
