a real end-of-term feel. But Western Australia’s spanking new 60,000-seat ground was full.

Perth-born seamer Andrew Tye took a maiden five-wicket haul of 5-46 in his fourth ODI as England were bowled out for 259 with Joe Root (62) the only man to pass 50.

Slammed

Another local lad, Marcus Stoinis, hit six fours and four sixes in a whirlwind innings of 87 as Australia reached 189-4.

But Curran slammed into the Aussie middle order to set up England for the Twenty20 tri-nation series against Australia and New Zealand, starting on Saturday. The South African-born allrounder made a surprise Test debut in the Ashes on Boxing Day.

He said: “I’ve been training hard, and to come and play the first ODI at this unbelievable stadium is fantastic. It’s been an unbelievable couple of months.

“It’s been a rollercoaster and has just all happened so quickly.

“What a stadium, what a day and what a team to be a part of.”

Morgan was proud of him, saying: “You look for guys to take chances. It’s not easy when you haven’t played for a while. It did swing the momentum nicely.”

Curran also took a diving catch to dismiss Stoinis but England’s fielding was patchy.

Jonny Bairstow, fielding at first slip, dropped Travis Head and Tye, Alex Hales put down Tim Paine and Moeen Ali twice misjudged balls on the ropes to concede boundaries. ROOT, Hales, Bairstow and Morgan all went unsold during the Indian Premier League two-day auction in Bangalore.

England paceman Mark Wood picked up a £166,000 deal with Chennai Super Kings.

All-rounder Ben Stokes was the big winner with a £1.3m deal at Rajasthan Royals.
