Klopp in dig over the VAR

- By CHRIS McKENNA

® JURGEN KLOPP believes officials need more help from VAR.

Liverpool crashed out of the FA Cup on Saturday at home to West Brom in a game that was held up for nearly four minutes while referee Craig Pawson decided whether to award a penalty to the home side.

The Baggies also had a goal ruled out for offside using the system in their 3-2 win.

But Klopp believes Baggies defender Ahmed Hegazi should have been sent off for a nasty lunge on Reds forward Roberto Firmino.

The Liverpool manager said: “Harsh challenges should be picked up.

“If the video assistant referee is not responsible for something like that, we should think over the rules again because the ref needs help in a situation like this.

Horrible

“I’m sure he would have whistled if he saw it, would’ve seen it exactly how it was, but he didn’t.

“If you see it on television it’s just horrible.”

Under VAR guidelines, the referee can be alerted if it is deemed a foul should have been a red card and the officials missed it.

Klopp added: “It’s the start of it, it’s normal that it’s a little bit rusty but I think it will be okay.”

The German also laid into Liverpool’s defensive flops

Even the arrival of world record £75m defender Virgil van Dijk has failed to plug the holes in their leaky backline.

Klopp said: “It’s not allowed to concede goals like we conceded. That’s it.

“That has influence on the whole performance.

“We have to avoid these things, 100 per cent, and the mistake was so obvious.” Match report – see pullout
