BREXIT WILL FIX IT FOR BRICKIES

Tradesmen big winners

- By PAUL DONNELLEY news@dailystar.co.uk

BRICKIES, sparkies and plumbers are set to rake it in as demand grows for their skills.

As Brexit bites and foreign tradesmen begin to go home, Brits will turn to homegrown workers.

Thanks to the demand for new workers, apprentices will trouser around £2,000 a year above the national average by 2022 even as they learn on the job.

DIY chain Screwfix has surveyed thousands of workers in the industries and found that the highest earners will be plumbers and electricians, with pay set to reach £31,000.

Belief

The average annual salary of a tradesman will be more than £27,500 in four years’ time, said the chain. At the moment the average salary for a bricklayer is £24,790.

Plumbers on average take home £27,330 while electricians on average earn £25,145.

The money to be made once they are qualified can be astronomical.

One plumber Stephen Fry, 34, earns £210,000 in London.

Graham Bell, Screwfix chief executive, said: “The research supports our belief that a trade apprenticeship is a strong career choice for young people. For those starting out, apprenticeships offer a great career choice without the burden of large debts from university fees.”

Last April the Government introduced the Apprenticeship Levy for firms who pay more than £3million a year in wages.

Employers pay 0.5% of their wage bill and are given a £15,000 allowance to offset the cost.
