Drinkers’ race rap

A DRINKERS’ group has apologised after it used the word “negro” in a crossword clue.

The Campaign for Real Ale’s Derby branch was heavily criticised on social media for the error in its magazine.

National chairman Colin Valentine said: “I would like to apologise for the offence caused.” TEAM GB’s first medal winner at the Winter Olympics fell in love with his sport after a drunken night out.

Dominic Parsons won bronze in the men’s skeleton yesterday, kick-starting Britain’s PyeongChang hopes.

His place on the podium was secured when world champion Martins Dukurs messed up his final run. Dom, 30, is Britain’s first male medal winner in the sport since John Crammond in 1948. He said of his shock result: “It hasn’t really sunk in yet. It’s been great. All the work we’ve put in has paid off.”

And he revealed he only took up the skeleton after being challenged during a night of boozing at Bath University.

The ex-400m runner went along to try out the sport with his friend after being invited to a trial by British slider Adam Pengilly when they were at a barbecue. Dom said: “I was feeling the effects of too much fun the night before, so sat out the sprint tests to nurse my head and feel sorry for myself. After a quick crash course on how to push the sled my hangover was forgotten.” Today, Lizzy Yarnold, 29, is hoping to secure GB’s second medal. She is third in the women’s skeleton going into the final two runs. Meanwhile, two Swiss skiers became the first athletes to be hit by norovirus. Doctors have been fighting an outbreak of the sickness bug. I thought I’d blown it: Page 39
