Gutted Gylfi fears World Cup KO

GYLFI SIGURDSSON fears his World Cup dream could be wrecked by a knee injury.

The £45m Everton midfielder, 28, is awaiting the results of a scan after damaging his right knee during Saturday’s 2-0 Premier League win over Brighton.

Everton have already said that Sigurdsson “could be out for several weeks”.

He is likely to miss his side’s final eight league games, but is also worried that he may have to sit out Iceland’s first appearance at the World Cup in Russia.

There are already questions as to how the injury was not picked up straight away.

Knock

Sigurdsson jarred his knee during the first half but managed to complete the full 90 minutes after receiving treatment.

After the game, Everton boss Sam Allardyce described the injury as just a “knock” and praised his man for playing on.

But Olafur Mar Sigurdsson, the player’s brother, has told reporters in Iceland that the joint of the right knee is damaged – and that his season is effectively over.

The worst-case scenario for the Toffees ace is that he would need surgery, which would rule him out for up to nine months.

Everton said in a statement: “It is anticipated that he could be sidelined for several weeks but it will only be after consulting with the specialist that a definitive time frame will be known.”

Sigurdsson helped Iceland become the smallest nation to reach a World Cup. Their first group game at the finals is against Argentina on June 16.
