Happy Lew’s kit of all right
LEWIS COOK was so chuffed to make his England debut he kept his entire kit as a souvenir.
The Bournemouth midfielder came off the bench in the second half of the 1-1 draw with Italy at Wembley on Tuesday.
“I’ve not just kept the shirt but I’ve kept my full kit,” he said.
“You get caps as well throughout the younger age groups and I’ll get one of those, but they have to go away and make it.
“I’ll get it all framed so it looks nice in my house. It was an unforgettable moment.”
Cook’s granddad Trevor Burlingham was celebrating too.
He picked up a £17,000 windfall from a £500 bet he placed on the former Leeds star to win his first England cap before his 26th birthday.
Cook, 21, said: “It’s a great achievement for me and my family. It makes me incredibly proud and was a dream come true.
“I had about 15 people at the game so that was nice to share the moment with them after the game.
“The gaffer just said to me to go and enjoy it and I did. I took it all in.
“I was focused on the game and for some reason it went really quickly, even though I was on for 20 minutes. But I really enjoyed it and it’s a moment I’ll never forget.
“Obviously I was nervous but I was so focused on the game, what I needed to do and the game plan. It was just about taking it all in. I was quite taken aback.
“It hasn’t sunk in yet and now we’re looking ahead to the weekend so I have something else to focus on, but it’s always been my dream since I was little.”
Cook’s side travel to Watford today and Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe is backing him to become an England regular.
Howe said: “I was watching both England games closely hoping Lewis would get on. I’m sure I speak for many Bournemouth fans in congratulating him.
“Hopefully this is the first of many caps for Lewis. I think it can give him that self-belief.” COOK UP A TREAT: Lewis loved England debut
