THREE LIONS MADE ME DEPRESSED

Carrick warning to Southgate stars

- By MIKE WHALLEY

MICHAEL CARRICK admits being in the England squad made him depressed.

In a warning to Gareth Southgate’s stars heading to Russia in June, the former England midfielder revealed the 2010 World Cup in South Africa almost sent him over the edge.

Manchester United ace Carrick (below), who won the last of his 34 caps in 2015, said: “I had been in the

single day... that is the most outstanding thing an athlete can show in their lives, and the people who surround them.

“You create something unique in terms of the locker room, spirit and friendship. It is impossible to achieve what we achieved if you are not good human beings, if you are not good people, if you don’t accept each other.

“In the end, what we have done is to be better than 19 other teams, nothing else. But what you have done – all the people here, you deserve all my respect.

“Always it will remain in my heart until the last day of my life, I am pretty sure of that. What I felt this season is something amazing.”

City will receive the Premier League trophy after their final weekend home game against Huddersfield on May 6.

Kyle Walker has set City the challenge now of becoming all-time greats, admitting they are still a long way from perfect.

The England defender, 27, said: “We can go on to great things.

“But the Liverpool game showed us that we are not a perfect team.

“Every single one of us wants to be recognised as one of the greatest teams to play in the Premier League.”
