PEP SIGHTS ON RECORD City eye 100 point tally

- By JEREMY CROSS

PEP GUARDIOLA has ordered Manchester City to finish the season as record-breakers.

Guardiola’s men sealed the title last Sunday with five games to spare, but the Spanish boss has no intention of taking his foot off the gas.

He wants to rub bitter rival Jose Mourinho’s nose in it by beating the record 95 points haul gained by the Portuguese’s Chelsea side of 2015.

City have 87 points with a possible 15 more available and can become the first side in Premier League history to smash the 100-point barrier.

Guardiola, whose side play host to Swansea tomorrow, wants no letup from City and said: “In the past I won the league at Bayern Munich and Barcelona with five, six or seven games left, but the next games were not good.

“We have to think about how many points we can get, it can be a good argument.

“What we need to do is already done. The record is not the most important thing, but maybe it can help us to be focused.

“Swansea are fighting relegation and it can be more complicated, but it would be nice to finish good in terms of having good feelings.

“It would be uncomfortable to finish in a bad way. The season still has games left to play and we have to respect the five opponents and the competition.

“But always there has to be a target. Maybe most goals and points will be a good focus for us.”

Guardiola has confirmed he will hold talks about a contract extension in the coming weeks ® but admits he has no idea how his side will react come the start of next season. Only two teams in Premier League history have managed to defend the Premier League title – Chelsea and Manchester United – and Guardiola wants to see if his stars can maintain their hunger and desire for success. The City boss added: “The year after we demand more and it is more complicated. “The best way is to maintain the levels and it will be a big test how we handle the last five games. “We have one year to defend it. Now let’s see how we handle it. The experience of this club is three titles in seven years, but after winning it we were not good. “It’s exciting to see how we’ll react next season. Back-to-back (titles) in the last decade... you’ve seen how difficult it is. “Here it’s so complicated, with a lot of contenders. It’s a good challenge. That’s the challenge and we are going to see. “I know how the players reacted to a bad season last time, but still I don’t know how they will react to success. That’s why it’s a challenge.”
