Cops probe ‘gay hate’ assault
A MUM had her skull “drilled in” during a suspected homophobic attack.
Brenda McLaughlin suffered “extremely grave” head injuries after being attacked with a power tool.
She was pinned down on the pavement as she left Ruby’s nightclub in Strabane, Co Tyrone.
The 38-year-old is now being treated at Altnagelvin Hospital in Londonderry.
Despite severe injuries, she was said to be in a stable condition last night.
Police are investigating whether it was a homophobic attack.
Family friend Corey French paid tribute to Brenda, describing her as having a “complete and utter heart of gold”.
Speaking about the incident, he said: “She was having good craic, we were having a laugh, chatting away.”
A 17-year-old has been charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent, possession of an offensive weapon and theft.
He is expected to appear at Omagh Magistrates’ Court today.
Northern Ireland cops have appealed for anyone who saw what happened to come forward.
Det Sgt Brian Reid said: “This was a brutal attack and the injuries sustained are extremely grave.
“We are exploring a possible homophobic motive for the crime and we are appealing for witnesses.
“We would like to hear from anyone who may have seen a male carrying a drill in the area.” TARGETED: Victim Brenda only
