Wenger doesn’t go potless after all...

-

ARSENE WENGER bowed out with a trophy after all at the Emirates – and hinted he could be back.

A double from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang plus goals from Alexandre Lacazette, Alex Iwobi and Sead Kolasinac gave Wenger a five-star send-off in his final home game as Arsenal boss.

But what happened afterwards will live longer in the memory, with Wenger being presented with the gold trophy awarded to the ‘Invincibles’ in 2003-04. It’s his to keep now.

After all the resentment felt in recent years by many Gunners fans who wanted him out, the supporters made him feel loved at the end.

There were banners in the stands, ‘Merci Arsene’ T-shirts on every seat, a guard of honour, and a noisy 59,540 crowd inside a stadium which has felt pretty empty in recent weeks.

It was Wenger’s 606th home match in charge of Arsenal. There will not be another.

His first, in October 1996, was so long ago, Burnley boss Sean Dyche was playing in the third tier that day.

Sad

But it was still a bittersweet goodbye. Arsenal will finish this season with their lowest points total under the Frenchman.

And the little gold trophy he was given to mark the end of his 22-year reign is not the one he wanted to end it all on.

“I will always be an Arsenal fan,” he said in his speech to fans on the pitch. “I will miss you. Thank you for being such an important part of my life. Hope to see you soon. Bye bye.”

At his post-match press conference, he said: “It was a very sad day. I have worked on every single part of this stadium. It is part of myself.

“I will cherish every minute

I was here. But it is a new start for me, even if they were not always happy, the fans respect me. I take it as a big compliment.

“I will have to see where I put the trophy. It was a surprise for me.

“I would be happy to sit in the North Bank but it depends if I work somewhere else or not.

“The only positive of that is that I can shout at the next manager! Sometimes, to make people happy is to go somewhere else.”

For a while it was like the good old days. There was a rousing rendition of the old favourite “One-nil, to the Arsenal” when Aubameyang fired
