WHAT’S HOT TO WATCH TODAY
I’M clearly not right in the head, because personally I thought the ending to Peter Kay’s Car Share – where John and Kayleigh failed to get together – was perfect. What made that show so brilliant, surely, was the fact it was beautifully rooted in real life. So a real-life-type ending – things NOT working out like they do in the movies, the man and the lady NOT driving off together into the sunset – seemed spot-on. Y’know, like, dead poignant and that.
Shows how much I know, though, because tens of thousands of viewers then went to the trouble of signing an online petition (and you know how hard THAT is, what with having to actually click a button and all) and demanded more – including (it implied) a happier ending.
Kay, as we know, eventually agreed to their demands. So he’s delivering one last regular episode later his month, rounding the story off. And, yes, despite those misgivings of mine,
I can’t wait to see it.
But before that we have tonight’s much publicised special, PETER KAY’S CAR SHARE UNSCRIPTED (10pm, BBC1), independent from the main story, with Kay and co-star Sian Gibson hilariously making stuff up as they go along. Comedy genius at its most instinctive. TONIGHT and tomorrow, Channel 4’s GENDERQUAKE (9pm) sees 11 people, each with a different gender identity, shacking up together for a week. They include straight Filomena, 27, whose traditional views cause a stir. “I don’t understand how someone born male can feel like a female,” she says. “How do you know what it feels like to be a woman?”
