Woman battered in bed

- By RUTH McKEE ruth.mckee@dailystar.co.uk

BRITAIN’S crime epidemic has reached a horrifying new low after a 90-year-old woman was beaten in her bed.

Iris Warner’s life is now “hanging in the balance” after an intruder broke into her home and attacked her as she slept.

She was rushed to hospital after her 60-year-old son Jeffrey discovered her slipping in and out of consciousness in bed.

The pensioner, of Brent, north London, was left with huge bruises all over her face and body after the raider battered her with a heavy blunt object.

Her attacker then ransacked her flat.

Iris’s family have now released devastating pictures of her to help police catch the sick intruder.

The latest attack comes as Britain is swamped by a spate of violent muggings and thefts. On Monday comedian Michael McIntyre became the latest victim of a wave of moped muggings.

Hammer-wielding thugs shattered the windows of his Land Rover and made off with his £15,000 Rolex watch. And now Prime Minister Theresa May has pledged to give new powers to police to let them chase down moped thugs. Officers have been accused of shunning high-speed chases as they fear huge insurance payouts if anything goes wrong.

But police powers are set to be ramped up. Making the announcement during a trip to Canada, Mrs May said: “This issue of moped crime is one that is of concern for people. “That’s why the former Home Secretary (Amber Rudd) brought in the police and talked with them about various issues and ways in which we could be helping the police to actually be dealing with it.” Last night a 16-yearold boy was fighting for his life after being repeatedly stabbed while walking home in his school uniform. Two older teenagers were arrested and a gun was found at the scene in Streatham Hill, south London.

ARTHUR Waszkiewicz, 39, was last night charged with the manslaughter and robbery of 100-year-old Zofija Kaczan, who died days after her neck was broken in a mugging in Derby.

He is due to appear at Southern Derbyshire Magistrates’ Court today.
