TV QUIZ shows can be divided into two categories: the ones where the contestants are ordinary members of the public (The Chase or Pointless), and the ones where they’re clever-clog boffins, or smartypants specialists in a particular field (such as University Challenge or The Clever-Clog Smartypants Specialist Boffin Quiz).

And my attitude as a viewer changes accordingly.

When it’s ordinary people competing, I naturally like to see them to do well. But when it’s so-called specialists, I naturally like to see them to make utter t*ts of themselves. Or at least I usually do.

I’m making an exception in the case of BRITAIN’S BEST JUNIOR DOCTORS, a new medically-themed quiz, hosted by Jo Brand, which is going out each night this week on BBC2 (7.30pm).

Why? Well, for two reasons: first, because these are marvellous, dedicated human beings we’re talking about.

And second because they’re being tested on their medical knowledge, their ability to diagnose a patient’s symptoms etc. And I’m not sure I’d be chuckling that much if any of them mistook chronic heart disease for mild indigestion. ALSO kicking off tonight, INSIDE THE AMERICAN EMBASSY (10pm, Channel 4) is a new three-part documentary series that takes us behind the scenes of the United States’ London operation.

It focuses to begin with on the newly appointed ambassador to the UK, Robert Wood Johnson, one of President Trump’s closest pals, during a particularly eventful first six months in the job.
