Prez snubs protests, meets Queen & slams ‘fake news’
DONALD Trump yesterday rated the relationship between Britain and the US as “the highest level of special”.
The US President’s praise came despite his earlier attack on Theresa May.
Mr Trump had lashed out at the Prime Minister in an interview, saying her Brexit blueprint would end any hopes of a transatlantic trade deal.
But when he was asked yesterday where he felt the “special relationship” stood, he said: “I give our relationship with the UK, in terms of a grade, the highest level of special.”
The President then made a grovelling U-turn over his previously-expressed opinions about the PM and her Brexit plans.
At a joint press conference, Mr Trump insisted his relationship with Mrs May was “very, very strong”. Speaking at Chequers, the former reality star claimed the pair “probably never developed a better relationship”.
Hailing Mrs May as a “very tough negotiator” and “a terrific woman”, he insisted she was “doing a fantastic job”. He added: “She’s a very smart, very tough, very capable person and I would much rather have her as my friend than my enemy.”
Mr Trump backed down on his comments over her Brexit policy, telling Mrs May “whatever you do is OK with me” but going on to add: “Make sure we can trade together.”
