Superstar Serena can clinch eighth singles title

- MARK PEARSON

ON THIS weekend in 2016, France were favourites for a major final and Limato was fancied to land the July Cup. Golfers were fine-tuning their skills for an assault on The Open at Royal Troon and Serena Williams faced Angelique Kerber in the Wimbledon singles final. Fast forward two years and there is déjà vu. Williams, who is 1-2 to win an eighth Wimbledon crown, beat Kerber in straight sets back then and is 11-10 to repeat that feat today. Kerber went on to land the US Open that same year and is 13-8 to claim her third Grand Slam.

Both players have only dropped a single set in a tournament full of shocks.

It is testament to the attitude and will of Williams who, just 10 months after giving birth to her first child, is to contest her 30th Grand Slam final. Having won 23 of them, it’s hard to look past her but Kerber can put up a fight, so Williams to win 2-1 at 11-4 looks a play. The world’s best golfers PEARSON’S line up for the 147th Open Championship at Carnoustie on Thursday. Americans have won both Majors to date in 2018. Jordan Spieth is 20-1 to win back-to-back Opens but Brooks Koepka is the player I like at 20-1. He has won the last two US Opens on links-style courses and has two top-10 finishes in his last two Opens.

In the July Cup I like Sands Of Mali for Richard Fahey.

He has half a length to find on Eqtidaar on their Commonwealth Cup run at Royal Ascot.
