A HUSBAND died after downing 11 cans of lager and a pint of spirits in his brother-in-law’s “man cave”.

Welder Damian Hennefer was described as a hard worker running a motor repair business and usually only drank socially at weekends.

But he “lost control” at his wife Karen’s nephew’s first birthday party, an inquest heard.

He disappeared into the man cave his brother-in-law Anthony had built in his garden. It was separate from the house and included a games room and bar.

In four hours, Damian, 35, drank 11 cans of Stella and a four-spirit cocktail. His pint glass was filled with shots of dark and spiced rum, vodka and Tia Maria.

He appeared drunk and had to be carried to a car by his wife and a pal.

They took him home to Leigh, near Manchester, but after he was sick Damian turned blue and his wife called an ambulance.

The stepdad died five days later in hospital.

Blood tests showed he would have been six times over the drink-drive limit. A post-mortem found he died from bronchopneumonia due to a brain injury caused when vomit entered his airways and stopped oxygen from reaching vital organs.

Ruling the death alcoholrelated, coroner Alan Walsh told the Bolton hearing that Karen had done “everything” to save her husband.

An ambulance took 13 minutes to arrive, but it was the quantity of alcohol consumed that “led to his death”.

He said: “It is devastating he should have died at that age having gone to a family celebration.”
