SalutesSERGIO Silva City legend

- By DAVID McDONNELL

SERGIO AGUERO cemented his status as one of the Premier League’s greatest strikers by adding another milestone to a stellar career.

With his majestic second-half strike, Aguero moved alongside Alan Shearer on

148 goals, on the list of most scored for a single Premier League club.

Having extended his deal with City until

2021, Aguero has every chance of catching Thierry Henry and Wayne Rooney, on 175 and 183 respectively, on that list.

Shearer’s overall Premier League goal record of 260 may ultimately be out of reach.

But Aguero’s City team-mate Bernardo Silva is in no doubt the forward is up there with the very greatest strikers to grace the English game.

“Sergio is the best scorer in Manchester City’s history,” said Silva.

“He’s a legend, not only for Manchester City but also for the Premier League. If not the best striker in the world, then one of the best.

“It’s great to have him with us. Every season he scores 30 goals or more. To have a player like him, it helps us so much.

“Everyone hopes he stays. If he reaches that level it will be even better, because everyone knows how important Alan Shearer was for English football and for the Premier League.

“I think Sergio can reach it.

Every season he keeps scoring more and more.

“We hope he can keep helping us to win more titles here in Manchester.

Clinical

“When you look at his career, he’s been doing this for more than 10 years.

“You have to admire players like him, who score 30 goals and next season they don’t rest, they want to score 30 or 40 again.

“We have to admire that and be happy to have him and enjoy it.”

Aguero’s goal was a thing of beauty, surging past three opponents from 40 yards out before exchanging passes with Raheem Sterling – who scored the first-half opener – and applying a clinical finish.

The 29-year-old forward, who has been struggling with a foot problem, was taken off in the

66th minute, with boss Pep Guardiola later revealing the plan was always for him to play an hour before being withdrawn.

Champions City went back to the summit of the table thanks to this win and the draw played out between Chelsea and Liverpool at Stamford Bridge.

Guardiola’s side are away to Hoffenheim in the Champions League tomorrow – where Aguero is set to be rested – then face a huge test at title rivals Liverpool on Sunday.

City have not won there since 2003 and Silva admitted this week, having lost their Champions League opener at home to Lyon, is a huge one for the club.

“We’ve started the week well, now we have to try and come back from the first Champions League game,” said Silva.

“We want to start winning in the Champions League, then it’s Liverpool. Everyone knows how big that game is.

“We want to finish this next week the best way and then go on the international break with three points in each competition.” BRIGHTON boss Chris Hughton insists his side do not have a mental block when it comes to playing away.

The Seagulls have not won on the road in the Premier League since November 2017, a run of 17 straight away games without a victory.

But Hughton said: “I can honestly say it doesn’t feel like an issue because I look at last season, where we got enough points at home, so there’s the balance.

“We were very strong at home last season but not good away.

“For a team that’s just starting its second season in this division, something had to give, otherwise, if we’re decent away from home and decent at home, then we would probably be somewhere in the top six.

“It’s not something we think about mentally and our approach is exactly the same.

“Obviously it’s different when you’re coming to these kind of games, but generally our approach is the same.

“We’re not the only team that will probably be better at home than away.”
