Silva praises goal ace

MARCO SILVA says Gylfi Sigurdsson’s hard yards on the training ground are just as important as his silky skills.

Sigurdsson’s incredible technical quality was evident in the precise finishes which helped to win this game handsomely.

But Silva is just as impressed with the Iceland international’s dedication and work ethic.

“Everybody knows about his technical quality,” said Silva. “But I am more happy because when I see a player work like he works, works every day, for me he is a real player.

“Football today is not just about quality. You need to work hard to achieve something important even when the things didn’t come your way.

“You have to keep going, keep working. I think he is an incredible example for us in our dressing room.”

Silva is known for pushing his players, driving them beyond usual conventions in training, demanding more.

The results had not been evident so far this season, with his team struggling to adapt to a new style, a new system and a new approach.

But finally in the second half, against Fulham, it all clicked, that hard work on the training ground being channelled into an energy and aggression that was too much for the shell-shocked visitors.

Fulham, in fact, had the better of the first half and should have been ahead
