21C Red Hotober!

- By JACK ANDREWS

BRITS are set to bask in balmy 21C sunshine this week.

But it will not last long with temperatures set to plummet by Saturday – and there is even a chance of snow.

By tomorrow or Thursday the mercury is expected to shoot well above the 17C average in the south at least.

Met Office meteorologist Alex Burkill said: “It could be 20C or even a bit warmer than that. Northern parts are likely to be a bit changeable with some rain.”

Tropical air driven across the Atlantic Ocean by the jet stream and warm winds from Europe are expected to lead to unseasonably warm weather.

Met Office forecaster Steven Keates added: “Temperatures will pick up with 21C not out of the question.

“It will feel very nice, warm, sunny and dry, although with more changeable conditions in the north.”

The north-south divide will continue with wet and windy conditions in the north while the south remains mostly fine and dry with chillier conditions at the end of the week.

And it might not get much better as the month goes on.

The Met Office forecast for later this month says: “Temperatures will probably be generally colder than average, but with some short-lived milder interludes.”

With the potential for freezing temperatures, Ladbrokes have slashed the odds from 6-4 to 10-11 that any part of the UK sees snow before October is out.
