Boozers to splash out £2bn

DRINKERS will spend around £2billion on booze this month in homes, pubs and Oktoberfes­t events.

A study shows more than £70million will be handed over at bars and restaurant­s every day during the month as we avoid the worsening weather by downing pints.

And it found people typically spend £42 a month each on booze. We part with

£30,000 during a lifetime. The report, by A LION hangs about as he waits for his next meal to come along on the African plains.

The not so fearsome beast shows even the king of the jungle can have a day off as he looks out over Queen Elizabeth National Park in Uganda. The brilliant snap was taken by Thomas Plura, a safari holiday tour boss from Germany who now lives in Rwanda. Macmillan Cancer Support, revealed the billions spent this month could fund all of its services for over a decade, including nurses and informatio­n centres.

It comes ahead of its Go Sober For October campaign.

Cara Grantham, fundraisin­g marketing manager at Macmillan, said: “It’s staggering to hear that in October the UK will spend over £2bn on alcohol. “Spent differentl­y, this money could have a huge impact We are asking people to give up alcohol for the month, asking friends and family for sponsorshi­p.

“Not only will you be raising vital money for a fantastic cause, but you might also see some benefits for yourself.”

Last year’s Go Sober For October raised more than £5m with 75,000 people taking part. ®

BRITAIN’S best selling real ale will be served extra chilled to woo younger beer drinkers. A new version of Sharp’s Doom Bar is to be kept at 8C, the same temperatur­e as lager.

Real ales are traditiona­lly served at 12-14C and the Campaign For Real Ale argues if it is too cold cask ale loses flavour. James Nicholls, from Sharp’s Brewery, said: “Doom Bar Extra Chilled is an exciting opportunit­y for us.”
