players, going abroad isn’t such a big deal these days.

“They know they can fly home in a couple of hours so they just go for it. ”

Millennial marvel Sancho has played around 300 minutes for Dortmund but has set up more goals than anyone else in Europe’s top five leagues this season.

He signed a new deal until 2022 this week and has been called up along with Chelsea kid Mason Mount who is currently starring on-loan for Derby in the Championship.

Also in the squad for the first time is Leicester’s James Maddison while Chelsea’s Ross Barkley is back in for the first time since May, 2016.

Injuries to Dele Alli, Jesse Lingard and Fabian Delph have left Southgate with huge gaps in midfield.

But there was no place for Manchester City wonderboy Phil Foden although Southgate insisted nothing should be read into that.

“I just think Phil is a bit further back physically than the other guys,’ he said.

“There’s no rush with Phil. We don’t doubt his ability. We’re as sure as you ever can be that he is going to be a top player.”

The Three Lions boss says that taking a close look at the top youngsters was vital.

“We’ve got 18 matches before the European Championships,” he said.

“Maybe for some of them, six months down the line might not be the right time but I suspect it might be for some of these guys.

“We could be looking at them in six months’ time and thinking we should’ve had a couple more months with them.

“We could have gone with guys who are 26 or 27 but our preference is to look at young ones, who have proved at youth level they’re as good as anything around the world.”
