‘Worst season yet’ for Mauricio

- By JOHN CROSS

MAURICIO POCHETTINO has revealed his “massive frustration” after claiming this season is the worst of his five years at the club.

Pochettino was searingly honest in his assessment after watching Tottenham make a disastrous start to their Champions League campaign and seeing the opening of their new stadium put back to next year.

Boss Pochettino has admitted he does not feel they can even compete with big-spending rivals and says the club has spent so much time worrying about off-the-field issues that they have lost focus.

Pochettino’s words come despite the club making their best start to a Premier League campaign and they would overtake reigning champs Manchester City with a win at Wembley tonight.

But Pochettino said: “My feeling is the worst I’ve had in the five years here.

“But it’s the best start for the club in the Premier League. It’s strange, no?

“I am really disappointed we are still waiting for the new stadium when we expected it there at the beginning of the season.

“Many things happened in the summer, many things that leave me not in my best mood.

“We still didn’t win anything. We fail but we achieve.

“It’s about learning to compete. It’s about changing something we need to do differently.

“Or maybe we are never going to learn because we have some quality but we cannot go up a level. “I prefer to think we need more time to improve.” Pochettino’s frustrations after drawing at PSV Eindhoven last week were obvious as Spurs now face the prospect of elimination after getting just one point from their three Champions League games.

Chairman Daniel Levy (above) did not buy a single player last summer – the first time a Premier League club has failed to make a signing in the window – and Pochettino admits they are struggling to compete.

“The frustration is massive because we have had less in every single aspect,” said Pochettino.

“We are not yet at the level to be real contenders. That is my opinion.”
