Farrell is happy to stay put for now

- By NEIL SQUIRES

ANDY FARRELL has sidestepped speculation that he will take over as Ireland’s head coach after the World Cup.

Farrell (above), defence coach under Joe Schmidt since 2016, is interested in the top job if the Kiwi decides, as expected, to return home next year.

He has rejected an RFU approach to rejoin England’s management team – with a chance to take over as head coach post-Eddie Jones – to remain with Ireland.

Farrell said: “I have a fantastic job, I really enjoy working under Joe.

“Joe will make his decision in time, I’ll keep enjoying myself and hopefully keep getting better.”

For now, however, Farrell must fire up the Irish to withstand the All Blacks this weekend at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin, a job he regards as the ultimate test for a defence coach.

He said: “They are the best attack in world rugby, which is probably one of the main reasons why they are on top of the tree.

“All the guys are comfortable on the ball. Nobody gets missed out.

“They are all good attacking players – even their front rowers have got a good feel for time and space.

“They are masters at making sure when things go wrong for them, their ability to stick to the plan and stay on point is better than anyone.”

New Zealand proved as much by coming back from 15-0 down against England last weekend to win the match by a point.
