group or some of the young players, we’re still working out how to do that.

“I’m sure that will happen in whatever way we feel is right.

“But for those players, it’s important what I say... they can take what they want. They have to keep learning what the coaches want of them.”

The decision to hand Rooney one more cap was criticised by goalkeeping great Peter Shilton, who holds the all-time England record of 125 appearances.

Shilton claimed it cheapened the cap while depriving someone else of a place in the squad.

Rooney, 33, has brushed off the flak and admits he could shed a tear when he comes on as a second-half substitute.

“If I was in a position where this game was going to take the record off Peter Shilton, I would never have played in the game,” said the DC United star.

“I would never have done that. But the game isn’t going to affect an outfield player or Peter Shilton in that aspect.

“So we felt it was a good opportunity to get some minutes again and say a thank you to the fans, but also to raise money for underprivileged children who need it desperately. It was the right decision to make.

“I’m not normally one to show my emotions that way, but when I scored the penalty against Switzerland (to become the record scorer) it was hard to hold my emotions back.

“There will be emotions inside. If they show on the outside, they will.”

Tottenham right-back Kieran Trippier has withdrawn from the squad with a groin injury.
