Roberts is right on track
BRIGHT FUTURE: Roberts CONNOR ROBERTS once doubted he had a future in football.
Now he has ended Chris Gunter’s eight-year reign as Wales right-back.
The Swansea star started to believe he was destined to underachieve as he struggled for games on loan at Middlesbrough and Bristol Rovers last year.
But 12 months on he is starring for Swansea in the Championship and set to start for his country, at the expense of 91-cap Gunter, in the Nations League clash with Denmark tomorrow.
Roberts, 23, who netted in the 4-1 win over Republic of Ireland in September, said: “A lot of people didn’t expect me to be there for that game against Ireland, but I performed well and scored the goal.
“It’s all about learning from the senior players. I’m not going to come in here and say I’m going to get more caps than Chris because what he’s done is an incredible achievement.
“If I can get half the appearances he has, then I will be happy.
“I just want to keep learning off the likes of him, Ashley Williams, Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsey because they’re world-class players who play right at the top.
“It’s not just me, we’ve got David Brooks and Ethan Ampadu, who are good enough to play at the same level these players have played at.”
